European Geoparks Network (EGN)

Geoparks, a new concept of nature conservation, emerged with the establishment of the European Geoparks Network in the year 2000. The organization is responsible for the registration and coordination of Geoparks within the boundaries of Europe. It operates in coordination with international organizations such as UNESCO, IUGS, and IUCN. Kula is the 58th Member Geopark of the European Geoparks Network. In response to the high demand from areas outside Europe that wanted to become Geoparks, UNESCO adapted the European Geoparks Network in 2004 and established the Global Geoparks Network. With the Madonie Declaration in 2005, the European Geoparks Network and the Global Geoparks Network gained an integrated structure. As of 2021, the UNESCO Global Geopark Network includes 169 Geoparks from 44 countries.

How to become a Geopark: Geopark status is an internationally recognized quality certificate. Geopark status is granted for a period of 4 years only after an independent expert panel affiliated with the European Geoparks Network (EGN) and UNESCO Global Geoparks Network (GGN) has conducted an examination. It is essential for any area to undergo inspection and approval by these two organizations before declaring itself a Geopark.
