Marmara Lake

Marmara Lake was registered as a wetland of national importance by the National Wetland Commission in 2017. Marmara Lake is an important wetland as it is a feeding, sheltering and breeding ground for many bird species. It hosts 101 of the 421 bird species found throughout Türkiye. It was determined that 39 of them were local, 38 were summer migrants, 17 were winter migrants and 5 were transit birds. Marmara Lake Wetland is the breeding area of the Dalmatian pelican, which is in the LR category on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). The lake also has an important place in terms of fish populations. There are rich fish populations of common carp (Cyprinus carpio), pike perch (Sander lucioperca), gray mullet (Mugu cephalus) and trout (Salmo trutta) species in the lake. Fish caught from the lake are offered for sale by the Gölmarmara and Surroundings Aquaculture Production and Evaluation Cooperative. Marmara Lake and its surroundings also have an important place in terms of plant species diversity. There are 394 plant species in the field, 5 of which are endemic. The lake is in danger of drying out due to global climate change and drought.
